16 Pieces of Advice My Mother Gave Me That I Wish I Had Listened To

God I hate to admit this: my mother was right … about everything. How do moms know everything? That’s a serious question, if anyone knows the answer, please tell me. Since I was a little girl, my mom as been doling out advice about everything: relationships, friendships, and life in general. She’s a bottomless pit of information and I should only be so lucky to be half the women she is one day.

Unfortunately, as I was growing up, I didn’t always listen to my mom. Come on though, who really listens to their moms when they’re young? Then, I grew up and realized the woman knows what she’s talking about and I wish I had listened to her.

If I had listened to my mother, I would likely have avoiding tears, heartbreaks, confusion, and hours of bitching to her about why life is so damn hard. Do me a favor, listen to your mothers!

Below are only some of the pieces of advice my mom gave me that I wish I had listened to (if I wrote them all down we’d be here for days):

  1. Be unapologetically yourself no matter what the situation or who you’re talking to.

  2. Never let someone control you no matter how much you love them.

  3. Your friends will start to dwindle when you get older and that’s okay.

  4.  Never be with a man who doesn’t treat his mom well, it’s an indication of how he treats women.

  5. Don’t fall in love someone who doesn’t deserve your love.

  6. Always, always, always wear a condom (sorry, mom).

  7. Never depend on anyone to make you happy.

  8. If you’re going on a date always carry fresh underwear in your purse.

  9. Always put on lip stick, it’ll make you feel good.

  10. Never miss an opportunity to learn something new.

  11. Always think good thoughts.

  12. Drink lots of water and don’t eat fried foods.

  13. Believe half of what you see and none of what your hear.

  14. It’s a lot easier to stay out of trouble than it is to get out of trouble.

  15. Finish everything you start, even if you hate it.

  16. If it feels wrong, it usually is.
