Living in NYC during the winter is pretty cold and miserable. Between the slush, ice, and heavy snow, it seems like getting outside and trying to get anywhere is impossible. Getting away for the holidays and going someplace warmer is like a dream that we can’t really achieve. We just look Snapchat and Instagram and envy the few lucky ones who were able to escape the misery.
If you’re looking to head away from NYC during the holidays, there are several options to consider. You may be looking for an area just as cold but with more snow and less people, or you may be craving the hot sun and some beach days. For any of your desires there are different places you can travel to, and what better time than for New Year’s.
Ringing in the New Year in a new location is so symbolic. You’re literally getting a fresh start on the year by being some place different, some place where you can feel like you’re on vacation and actually relax to get you into the right mindset of restarting a new year. Here are a few places to keep in mind if you’re looking for NYE travel.
This might not be the absolute cheapest depending on your budget, but heading to the capital of any country, specifically Iceland, is always a good idea. There are various places to stay and watch the fireworks celebration in the vibrant and welcoming city. According to Travel and Leisure, community bonfires are held to symbolize the burning of “the previous year’s troubles.” Sign me up!
Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
Price of Travel says that Tenerife is “the most English-language-friendly of Spain’s Canary Islands” so don’t worry about any language barriers. The Canary Islands don’t get unbearably hot during the winter months, so visiting for New Year’s will be pleasant and comfortable. Since the average high temperature is 71° and the beaches are not swarming or crowded, hotels are relatively affordable. Los Cristianos and Playa de la Americas are the most recommended areas.
New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is the city of fun, especially during Mardis Gras. However, they also party hardy for New Year’s Eve. The party starts on the Bourbon Street strip and continues on to live music and partying in Jackson Square. A giant fleur de lis is dropped at the Jax Brewery to signify the new year and there is a fireworks display above the Mississippi River.
Miami is another party city that’s perfect for New Year’s Eve. Nightlife and high energy make up the social life of Miami, and NYE is the perfect time to hit the city for some fun. Located in southern Florida, the weather for New Year’s will be so much better than anyone in New York could even begin to imagine. According to Skyscanner, nightclubs like Mango’s, Mansion, and Club 50 are the best options to celebrate.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
If you’re looking for something low-key, a trip out west to Santa Fe may be just what you need. Unlike Miami and New Orleans, there will not be insane parties that crowds to flock to in Santa Fe, but sometimes the quieter the better. You can spend the holiday with a nice bonfire and spend the rest of the weekend visiting museums and antique shops.
