5 Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

Hey, procrastination happens to the best of us. Maybe you’ve started an essay at 2am the night before its due. Perhaps you’ve gone shopping for your family’s holiday presents on Christmas Eve. Or, maybe you’ve stalled making romantic plans on the day of love, Valentine’s Day.

Whether you put off making plans, forgot, or found yourself with an unexpected date, it’s not too late to plan something impressive (or at least, passable). Sure, you won’t be enjoying a prix fixe at the hottest restaurant in your city, but you can still do something fun with your partner that’s not totally shitty.

So, for the slow ones out there, here are five last-minute Valentine’s Day date ideas to save your ass:

Cook For Them

If you’re going to do this one, you have to check a few boxes first. If you’re going to make a romantic meal for Valentine’s Day, you must: 1) actually be able to cook; 2) make three courses of nice food (no Kraft Mac & Cheese); and 3) have a clean, nice apartment with no roommates (or at least roommates who are willing to leave for the evening). If you hastily make some crappy food in a messy apartment while your roommates play video games or sit on the couch drinking, it’s not going to cut it.

Go on a Picnic

This is for those lucky bastards who live in warm climates. If it’s less than 60 degrees where you live, do not attempt this. Again, the food must be quality, and the location you take your date to must be nice and scenic. Ritz crackers at the playground by your house don’t count.

Go to a Museum

If your date/significant other is into learning new things, try taking them to a museum this Valentine’s Day. Most of them don’t require reservations, and a lot of them don’t even require paying. Wander around beautiful art galleries or learn about the Civil War while you get to know one another better. Get drinks after and talk about which exhibit stuck out to you the most, and why.

Karaoke

I think this could be fun! Fight through the drunk singles to get on stage at your favorite karaoke bar. Jokingly (or seriously, I guess) serenade one another with the cheesiest love songs you can think of. You could even do a duet, High School Musical style. Take shots and embarrass yourselves together. Being free and fun onstage will no doubt bring the two of you closer, no reservation required.

Get Creative at Home

If you know your Valentine’s Day pretty well, you can be a bit more lenient with it. Something like building an elaborate fort set up with a sexy movie, or having a game night complete with prizes for your a particularly competitive partner. Set up a wine tasting in your own home, complete with multiple types of red, white, and sparkling beverages. Pair it with fancy cheeses and call it an evening.
