Cycling is one of the most notoriously drug-fueled professional sports of all time, which makes it a perfect mark for Andy Samberg’s goofily satirical eye. Thus we have Tour de Pharmacy, an HBO special presentation that just dropped its first teaser today:
Samberg established his HBO sports bona fides with 7 Days in Hell, a faux-documentary that mocked Grand Slam tennis’s propensity for matches that are so long they warp players and viewers’ senses of time and decency. Tour de Pharmacy is putting that same attitude to the pedal, going back to 1982, “a dark and fictitious time in cycling history … marred by the doping of virtually all of its competitors.”
Because Samberg is friends with everybody, Pharmacy‘s cast is an insane list of actors and athletic figures, including John Cena, Daveed Diggs, Orlando Bloom, Freddie Highmore, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Julia Ormond, Dolph Lundgren, James Marsden, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fielder, Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Joe Buck, Mike Tyson, J.J. Abrams, Phylicia Rashad, Chris Webber, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. There is also a cameo (teased at the end of the teaser) from one particular fellow that genuinely stuns me.
Tour de Pharmacy premieres Saturday, July 8, on HBO.
