The first award of the night at the 2017 Golden Globes went to Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance as Ray Marcus in the Tom Ford-directed thriller Nocturnal Animals, and I have a theory about the exact moment when Taylor-Johnson won over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association…
Marcus is the leader of a group of hooligans who kidnap and kill Jake Gyllenhaal’s wife and daughter, and Taylor-Johnson plays him with just the sort of sniveling glee that makes villainous characters indelible. About halfway through the film, Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon’s sheriff character track Marcus down and find him hanging out on the front porch of a run-down desert house without a care in the world.
And then there comes the award-winning clincher: save for his shoes and the pants around his ankles, Taylor-Johnson is totally nude, as he is in the midst of taking a dump in the toilet that he has installed on his porch.
I have previously seen Taylor-Johnson in the likes of Kick-Ass, Savages, and Godzilla, and I have never really thought much of him. But when I beheld him on the crapper, really stretching himself as an actor, I knew he was something special. Clearly, the voters of the HFPA felt the same way.
