Back in the late nineties, when our parents desperately tried to keep us from watching the nightly news and everyone was obsessed with a very different blue dress, the country was rocked by the scandal that engulfed the White House when President Bill Clinton had an affair with intern Monica Lewinsky and lied about it under oath, which eventually lead to a failed impeachment effort. Also, cigars were involved.
Now, it looks like the nineties nostalgia craze remains alive and well, as Amazon Studios has bought a Black List screenplay by Flint Wainess about the whole brouhaha. Entitled Linda and Monica, the film chronicles the doomed friendship between Lewinsky and Linda Tripp, who recorded their phone conversations about Lewinsky’s illicit encounters with the president, and then shared those tapes with prosecutor Kenneth Starr, who was investigating the Clintons’ involvement in the Whitewater scandal, which is a whole other can of worms and doesn’t involve cigars, and is therefore way less interesting.
No director or casting announcements yet, but the film will be produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch, the trio who brought Fences to the big screen last year. Will Linda and Monica be an awards contender? I guess it depends on your definition of the words “be” and “an” are…
