Backlash Mounts Against Indian TV Show Depicting Child Marriage

An Indian TV show Pehredaar Piya Ki has received a lot of backlash as it depicts a marriage between a 9-year-old boy who is married to a 19-year-old girl. People have flocked to social media to condemn the show. The show fanned the flames when an episode that focused on their honeymoon aired.

In it there was this line of dialogue that creeped many out:

“He is a kid and we don’t know when he will be big enough to satisfy you.”

Viewers decided they had enough and started a petition to ban the show on Change.org. It is addressed to I&B Minister Smriti Irani. They demand a ban on the “obnoxious and perverted series.”

As of now, more than 50,000 people have signed the petition which reads:

“Pehredar piya ki. – A 10 year old impressionable little kid(” piyaa”) caressing and stalking a lady who’s more than double his age and filling sindoor in her “maang” is being telecasted at prime time -8:30pm on sony. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire Nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be infuenced by such tv serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial.”

The show has even been slammed by some Indian TV starts. I do not know how long this will stay on the air.
