20th Century Fox has announced that the release dates for two of its most notable upcoming films have been pushed back. Originally, X-Men: Dark Phoenix was slated to be in theaters on November 2, 2018, but it will now be released on Valentine’s Day, 2019, and New Mutants, having already been pushed back to early 2019, has been pushed even further, with its new opening date now August 2, 2019.

This release date shuffling has led to rumors, suggesting that Fox ordered for production on both films, particularly New Mutants, for reshoots and to make it scarier. There have also been rumors that these new release dates have to do with Disney’s upcoming acquisition of Fox’s film studio and characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That deal is expected to close in late 2018 or early-to-mid-2019, pending regulatory approval.
Check out the reaction from Twitter below:
I get that Fox has never done a superhero movie in that November slot before but slotting DARK PHOENIX into mid-February seems like such release-date superstition. "Black Panther and Deadpool did well there, people must love going to superhero movies in mid-February!!"

At this point you have to wonder if New Mutants will even be released before Disney-Fox deal closes. Companies estimated 18 months last December. New Mutants’ new date is cutting it awfully close to that time https://t.co/IiTeUw9zyB

If the Fox deal closes this year, which is probably will, do you really think Kevin Feige will put up with an X-Men movie (with Skrulls) in theaters one month before Captain Marvel (with MCU Skulls)? Nope.
I’d be surprised if we see Dark Phoenix and New Mutants now.

I'm going to make a wild out prediction.
I don't think New Mutants will be released in theatres at all.
I think Fox is gonna sell it to a streaming service right before the deal closes.
Dark Phoenix will be the final Fox X-Men film to hit the big screen.

Dark Phoenix stars Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and New Mutants stars Turner’s Game of Thrones sister, Maisie Williams.
