David Blaine nearly killed himself during a stunt on the latest episode of Beyond Magic, which aired Saturday, when he tried to catch a bullet in his mouth.
The 43 -year-old illusionist was attempting to perform a trick called the “bullet catch,” in which a metal cup in his mouth would stop the rifle bullet in his mouth. The shield attached to the cup that protects Blaine from the bullet continuing into his throat shattered, and sent the cup fragment and bullet into the back of his throat.
“When the bullet struck the cup, there was a high-pitched ringing in my ears and I felt an impact on the back of my throat,” Blaine remembers. “I was sure the bullet went right through my head and that I was dead,” he said in the special. “Suddenly I became aware of the pain and it brought me back. At that moment, I realized that the mouth guard had shattered again, and I was alive.”
Blaine has been performing the stunt since 2010, and despite reservations from his assistant to ever try the bullet catch again, the illusionist won’t let it be his last attempt. “We’re going to do it right,” he says. “That’s the end of the story.”
