Dear Holly:

What’s the deal with female viagra?

Sara, 31

You’ve heard of Viagra, the little blue pill that’s meant for men, but have you heard of Addyi? It’s the little pink pill, which is meant for women. However, instead of targeting the genitals to aid in sex, like Viagra does, it targets a woman’s brain chemistry to aid in sex. Here’s a little more information about the way Addyi works:

What Does It Do?

Addyi is meant to increase your pleasure during sex and raise your libido. How does this happen if the pill is aimed at your brain? Well, many women aren’t in the mood to have sex, because they deal with an abundance of stress, fatigue, and low self-esteem. This pill is meant to change all of that, which in theory, would raise their libido.

How Often Should You Take It?

Unlike Viagra, which men are only supposed to take once whenever they’re planning on having sex, Addyi is meant to be taken every single day. It’s just another pill that women need to remember to take on a daily basis. Again, unlike Viagra, it doesn’t work right away. It can take up to eight weeks for it to start working its magic.

Where Can You Buy It?

Unfortunately, Addyi is difficult to get your hands on. If you’re interested in it, you can’t just pick it up from your local pharmacy without a prescription. You actually have to go down to your doctor, have a series of tests, and then get your prescription. Even when that happens, you might have to go down to a specialty pharmacy, because most of them won’t carry the medication. Of course, that might change in the future.

What Are The Side Effects?

The biggest downside of Addyi? While you’re taking it, you’re meant to stay away from alcohol completely, because it can cause severe tiredness. Even if you stay away from your daily drinks, the pill can still cause dizziness and queasiness. Half of the women who have tried the pill reported that it didn’t even create the desired effect of raising their libidos, so it might not work for you even if you do everything right.
