Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Movie: Borg vs McEnroe (Limited Theatrically) – The 1980 Wimbledon final between Björn Borg and John McEnroe was a classic study in contrasts: the reigning champ versus the brash upstart. Ice-Borg versus Superbrat. It absolutely lived up to its billing and still reigns as one of the greatest tennis matches ever. Danish director Janus Metz Pedersen’s film applies dazzling cinematography and editing to the clash, and Shia LaBeouf as McEnroe is a casting masterstroke.
2. Podcast: R U Talkin’ R.E.M. Re: Me? – I still have to make my way through U Talkin’ U2 to Me?, but for now I can be satisfied with Adam Scott Aukerman’s follow-up, in which they exclusively discuss the discography of R.E.M. (Of course, in actuality they have many detours, like the classic mini-podcast-within-a-podcast, I Love Films. And don’t sleep on Talkin’ About Trees!) Their enthusiasm for the seminal college rock band is so deeply felt, but also so wonderfully banal.
3. Podcast: And a Movie: A Community Retrospective – Community is my favorite TV show of all time, so now that it is no longer airing new episodes, I am always thirsty for any fresh Greendale-related content. Thus I cannot say no to a podcast that takes a deep dive into all 110 episodes. And a Movie, presented by a couple of human beings named Daniel and Trent, only posts new episodes sporadically (basically whenever the hosts have enough time), but if you’re a major fan of Dan Harmon’s all-time great sitcom, it is always a treat when they arrive.
