Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Movies: Avengers: Infinity War (Theatrically Nationwide) – The past several Marvel movies have felt more like assignments than fun events to some of us. But after recently reading a series of Entertainment Weekly articles about the history of the MCU, I am remembering the great joy that came from the halcyon days of Iron Man and company. I have not had the chance to see Infinity War yet, so I do not know if it takes the necessary risks to tap into that excitement, but I am genuinely holding out hope that it does.
2. TV: Taskmaster Series Premiere (April 27 on Comedy Central) – Taskmaster (adapted from a British program of the same name) combines two of my great loves: game shows and Reggie Watts. The surreal Late Late Show bandleader, he of the transcendentally glorious coif, runs affairs as the titular taskmaster, assigning bizarre challenges to his celebrity subjects, like Lisa Lampanelli, Freddie Highmore, and Ron Funches. Tasks in the first couple of episodes include playing basketball without hands and painting a portrait of a horse while riding a horse.
3. Comedy: John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (May 1 on Netflix) – John Mulaney’s recent SNL hosting gig provided the latest evidence that he is a very funny guy and in particular that he is a more-than-capable stand-up. So if you want to laugh, I’m sure you could do much worse than watching Mulaney’s latest Netflix special.
