Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Movie: BlacKkKlansman (Theatrically Nationwide) – In 1979, a black Colorado Springs detective infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, with his white Jewish partner playing him in person at Klan meetings. And somehow, it has taken nearly 40 years for this story to become a Spike Lee joint. Coming out a year after the Charlottesville riots, BlacKkKlansman is a hilarious and electric warning for audiences to be on the lookout for hate.
2. Movie: The Meg (Theatrically Nationwide) – There are a few new releases this week that have intriguing, evergreen elements. There’s Dog Days, which features, well, dogs. There’s Slender Man, and you know I love recommending every new horror movie, and it is possible to make a decent fright flick out of an urban legend, no matter how silly. But out of all these August hot dogs, I’m going to spotlight creature feature The Meg, because it features Jason Statham stabbing a giant shark. No matter how good or bad the rest of the movie is, that is just essential viewing.
3. TV: Insecure Season 3 Premiere (August 12 on HBO) – Will Issa finally get her act together for good in Season 3? All signs point to “not likely.” The trailer features Kelli giving her the advice “Don’t look a gift horse in the dick,” which is certainly a memorable turn of phrase, but what will its practical consequences be? That’s what this upcoming batch of episodes are here to let us know!
