Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Comedy: Demetri Martin: The Overthinker (Streaming on Netflix) – Since it’s Labor Day weekend, plenty of you probably have time to catch up on some new content you may have missed recently. That might include the latest droll stand-up special from the visual aid-happy Demetri Martin, which dropped on Netflix a few weeks ago. The Overthinker adds some lightly form-busting voiceover and offers key insights into parties, laughter, and peeing.
2. TV: The Purge Series Premiere (September 4 on USA) – I’m not exactly excited for The Purge TV series, but I am intrigued, and intrigued enough to recommend checking it out. I think that the film franchise has already more than exhausted what can be wrung out of the concept of crime being legal for a 12-hour period. So this small screen version could be a complete disaster, but I want to know how it will attempt to avoid that fate.
3. Podcast: Pop Mom – Formerly known as Mom on Pop, the pop culture podcast hosted by John Teti (late of The AV Club) and his mom Bonney is finally back with a slightly different title. John’s life is dedicated to providing insights into entertainment, whereas for Bonney it’s just a hobby, but she still brings just as much passion. Since their return, they’ve dug into AMC stalwart Better Call Saul and Japanese reality show Terrace House. If you love movies, TV, and when sons call their mothers, then this is the podcast for you.
