Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends three entertainment essentials – one cinematic, one televisual, and one wild card – to make sure you get the most out of your leisure hours.
1. Movie: Hidden Figures – This docudrama about the female African-American mathematicians and engineers who were integral to NASA during the Space Race era has been playing in select cities the past few weeks and is expanding today. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe star as the real-life women who are as inspiring as anyone in American history. Their chemistry alone is enough to make this an ideal moviegoing choice for the whole family.
2. TV: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Season 2 Premiere (January 11 on TBS) – The Daily Show’s eponymous show provided the incendiary commentary that the 2016 news cycle was just begging for. She is moving to Wednesdays for 2017, so update your DVRs accordingly, and make sure to don your Nasty Woman shirt.
3. Movies (and TV) on TV: Golden Globes – Generally, I do not care about who wins the Golden Globes, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for its offbeat picks that flummox both general audiences and the people whose watch movies and TV for a living. (Remember when Mozart in the Jungle when Best TV Comedy or Musical last year?) But I do enjoy all the shenanigans that transpire at this most booze-fueled of all awards shows. Jimmy Fallon is hosting (will he bring along his puppy predictors?), and Meryl Streep is receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
