Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Movie: American Animals (Limited Theatrically) – Evan Peters and Barry Keoghan lead a heist crew attempting to make off with some valuable rare art books. They are in way over their heads, but they have pumped themselves up to believe that they can pull off the impossible. The real people behind this true story also make appearances to mess around with the nature of reality.
2. TV: Pose Series Premiere (June 3 on FX) – Ryan Murphy shows work best when they are able to luxuriate in opulence and give voice to the voiceless, and Pose is a perfect fit for that formula. The setting is the LGBTQ ballroom scene of 1980s NYC. Big names like Evan Peters, James Van Der Beek, and Kate Mara play their parts, but it looks like they will be ceding center stage to a bunch of newcomers who are ready to break big.
3. TV: Whose Line Is It Anyway? Season 14 Premiere (June 4 on The CW) – This is the sixth CW Whose Line season, which is just as many go-rounds as the show had on ABC back in the day. Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, and Wayne Brady have been doing the improv game for basically half their lives. Have they been cursed for eternity to conjure make-em-ups for our amusement? I don’t know, but after all these years, they still seem to be enjoying themselves.
