Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Movie: Incredibles 2 (Theatrically Nationwide) – Superpowers are still illegal, but Elastigirl has been hired for a PR campaign to turn the tide of public opinion. Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible tries to keep things humming along on the homefront, where Jack-Jack’s powers are emerging like crazy, Violet is doing spit takes over boy trouble, and Dash is learning the “new math.” We may not all have superpowers, but we can learn plenty from watching this movie about how to be a decent family member and an upright citizen.
2. TV: Drunk History Season 5 Mid-Season Premiere (June 19 on Comedy Central) – This current batch of the true tales of the past told while sloshed has a bigger episode count than usual, so Comedy Central figured we needed a break for a few months to get sober before diving back into it again. But now, the break is over and school is back up and running for the summer session. The return ep. features a trio of World War II-themed stories.
3. TV: The Gong Show Season 2 Premiere (June 21 on ABC) – The talk of the summer 2017 revivals is back! This bizarre talent show is really one of the purest things on TV, even though it features Mike Myers hosting in character as fictional British comedy legend Tommy Maitland. Who will top last year’s offerings of contortionists, noisemakers, and the nattily dressed playing the piano while balancing another heavy musical instrument? (The Fun & Games continue when the Alec Baldwin-hosted Match Game returns right after.)
