Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. TV: The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Finale (March 21 on FX) – “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” has proved to be a bit of a misnomer, as American Crime Story Season 2 has turned out to be more “The Andrew Cunanan Story,” with Darren Criss giving the performance of his career. The show has opted for a simple, but unique and mold-breaking storytelling style, starting at the end and winding back to fill in the truth. How will the finale close the loop?
2. TV: RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 Premiere (March 22 on VH1) – The All Stars Season 3 finale was just yesterday, but already we’re jumping right into the next edition of our regular Drag Race competition, thus prompting the question: will there ever be a week without RuPaul-related content on our devices ever again? Could the future possibly be so utopian?
3. TV: Portlandia Series Finale (March 22 on IFC) – Put your birds on at half mast, as Fred and Carrie, their many alter egos, Mr. Mayor, and all the rest of this hipster utopia’s residents take their final bow. Portlandia’s conclusion surely marks the end of an era in both comedy and culture. Also, keep an eye out next week as we here at News Cult take a deep dive into the best that the show has had to offer over the years.
