Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends three entertainment essentials – one cinematic, one televisual, and one wild card – to make sure you get the most out of your leisure hours.
1. Movie: T2 Trainspotting – This weekend you have a choice. Choose life. Choose Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor reuniting. Choose inscrutable Scottish accents. Choose sex tapes for blackmail. Choose trippy visuals. Choose canted camera angles. Choose a weirdly clever use of Snapchat. Choose a 20-years-later sequel that is surprisingly relevant. Choose T2 Trainspotting.
2. TV: Baskets Season 2 Finale (March 23 on FX) – Any time I have the opportunity to write about Baskets is a good time. Zach Galifianakis’ hilariously melancholy meditation on the artist’s life was recently renewed, so the upcoming wrap-up of this current batch of episodes should tease a typically atypical new chapter. This year has seen a death by choo-choo train, a genuine connection forged at the Ronald Reagan Library, and a deal for a DJ gig locked down during a funeral. What’ll they think of next?!
3. Sports on TV: March Madness (Through April 3 on CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV) – I am on the entertainment beat, and nothing is more reliably entertaining year in and year out than the NCAA Division I college basketball tournament. Whether you fill out your bracket based on actual basketball knowledge, uniform colors, mascots, or conferring with the oracle at Delphi, there is enough thrilling drama for everybody in 60+ games over three weeks.
