Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. Film: Gemini (Limited Theatrically) – Jill (Lola Kirke) and Heather (Zoë Kravitz) are making a go of it in the movie biz. Heather’s a hot young actress, and Jill’s her assistant. Everything seems to be fine until Jill discovers Heather dead by gunshot wound, and suddenly a stylish little noir is set into motion. Aaron Katz’s latest feature is not just a satisfying mystery, but also a triumph of characterization.
2. TV: The Last O.G. Series Premiere (April 3 on TBS) – Tracy Morgan has had quite a sitcom career with the 7-season run of 30 Rock, but isn’t it about time that he takes center stage on his own series? He exercised that option a decade and a half ago with The Tracy Morgan Show, but that only lasted one season. Hopefully this TBS offering, in which he plays an ex-con who is flummoxed by his recently gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood, will have a longer life. Tiffany Haddish is on hand to deliver the energy as his ex-girlfriend, while Cedric the Entertainer will entertain as the owner of a halfway house.
3. TV: Legion Season 2 Premiere (April 3 on FX) – This series about schizophrenic mutant David Haller (Dan Stevens) and his similarly powered friends is a bit of a pastiche of every landmark piece of psychedelic film and television ever, but showrunner Noah Hawley has somehow managed to weave it into something all its own. Let’s just say I am so very hungry for more astral plane adventures.
