Every Friday, NewsCult Entertainment Editor Jeffrey Malone recommends the entertainment essentials of the week – at least three, often more, and usually at least one cinematic and at least one televisual, but it could be ANY combination.
1. TV: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle Series Premiere (May 11 on Amazon) – The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is one of those formative shows of my childhood that originally aired many years before I was born but was rerun frequently enough to still make its impact. Now the moose and squirrel are being rebooted. Will it win over the current generation of kiddos? We can sure hope that it will be relevant enough to do so. After all, Russian villainy remains in vogue.
2. TV: Masterpiece: Little Women (Premieres May 13 on PBS) – Louisa May Alcott’s sprawling American saga of the March sisters gets its latest adaptation courtesy of BBC and PBS. I saw the first episode at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, along with a Q&A session with some of the creative team, who were all rightfully jazzed to be involved. The cast includes such heavy hitters as Emily Watson, Angela Lansbury, and quickly rising star Kathryn Newton (Blockers, Halt and Catch Fire).
3. TV: New Girl Series Finale (May 15 on FOX) – Well, now Jess and Nick are finally engaged, and added bonus: they’ve also just adopted a Jack Russell terrier. So I’m pretty sure we’re going to see the wedding we’ve all been waiting for at some point when the final two episodes air back-to-back. New Girl is a show that has kind of straddled two eras in network TV, and as such its finale is an important nexus in broadcast history.
