A Facebook Memo Just Leaked in Which VP Andrew Bosworth Says “Growth at Any Cost”

Another day, another Facebook shit show.

Hot on the heels of Facebook swirling the dumpster, a memo has leaked in which Facebook VP Andrew “Boz” Bosworth outlined “growth at any cost.”

Facebook is currently attempting to handle one scandal with Cambridge Analytica, a data firm that was able to exploit Facebook to get millions of user profiles without consent back in 2014.

Now, the leaked memo published by BuzzFeed NewsBosworth said,

“That can be bad if they make it negative. Maybe it costs a life by exposing someone to bullies. Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools. And still we connect people.”

Basically, he doesn’t care what happens as long as there’s growth.

Bosworth continued,

“That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified. All the questionable contact importing practices. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it.”

When the story broke, Bosworth tweeted that he doesn’t agree with what he said back then (and he didn’t even agree when he wrote it):

When everyone called bullshit, Bosworth wrote:

Mark Zuckerberg gave the following statement about the memo:

Boz is a talented leader who says many provocative things. This was one that most people at Facebook including myself disagreed with strongly. We’ve never believed the ends justify the means. We recognize that connecting people isn’t enough by itself. We also need to work to bring people closer together. We changed our whole mission and company focus to reflect this last year.

Yeah, good luck, Facebook.
