Tyler Perry will probably never give up the cross-dressing completely, but he does also often seem to be in the mood to branch out with his roles of choice. And if you’ve seen Gone Girl, you know that he can act without his signature shtick.
So the announcement that Perry will be playing Colin Powell in Adam McKay’s upcoming Dick Cheney shall be received with intrigue and approval by cineastes like me. Powell was the first secretary of state in the George W. Bush administration, and he supplied the key (faulty) intel that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Similarly, Perry’s string of hits have supplied key (mostly reliable) intel that a certain segment of the moviegoing population is often underserved.
Perry is joining a cast that already includes Christian Bale as Cheney, Sam Rockwell as Bush, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, making Perry the first cast member who actually looks at least a little like the person he’s playing.
