“Your body is not who you are. You shed it like a snake sheds its skin,” begins the creepy trailer for new Netflix original series Altered Carbon. The series plays off of the fear of technology phenomena we see in popular series such as Black Mirror, but adds a healthy dose of badass action.
Set in the distant future when human consciousness can be downloaded into different bodies, eternal life is possible. The story centers around ex-Envoy soldier Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman and Will Yun Lee), whose consciousness was brought back to life in a different human body 250 years after his death. Kovac’s second chance at life hinges on his ability to solve the attempted murder of Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy).
Fortunately, Kovacs’ flesh vessel comes equipped with “combat muscle memory” and it shows. In one scene, he fights off several threatening armed men. “I thought you’d be bigger. They made me bring all this backup,” the head of the operation comments, before being disarmed by Kovacs.
One thing is certain: the mystery must be solved, but things aren’t as simple as they seem.
The series is set to make its Netflix debut on February 2nd, and we can’t wait to see how messed up things get.
