Going “Back in Time”: Huey Lewis and the News Musical in the Works

Someone tell Patrick Bateman: there’s a new musical coming out based on the discography of Huey Lewis and the News. It’s called Heart of Rock and Roll, and fans of “The Power of Love”, “If This Is It”, “It’s Hip to Be Square”, and “Stuck With You” will enjoy this musical, with a book written by Jonathan Abrams, based on a story by himself and Tyler Mitchell. Gordon Greenberg will direct.

For our younger readers, Huey Lewis and the News was a popular band in the 1980s and 90s, taking off after their 1983 album Sports. That album went multiplatinum and enjoyed international success. The band hit the Billboard Top 10 a whopping 19 times, and were nominated for an Oscar and a Grammy for the Back to the Future tune “The Power of Love.”

Huey Lewis and the News is one of many bands to get the musical theater treatment as of late, with other iconic artists and bands such as The Bee Gees, Donna Lewis, Cher, The Go-Gos, and Alanis Morrisette.
