Goodbye, Herbie: Volkswagen to Cease Production of Their Beetle Cars

So much for new drivers who were looking to cop the car of their dreams: the Volkswagen Bug will be no more.

The Beetle will forever be known as a girly car, and those Herbie movies starring Dean Jones won’t change my mind. When I think of Herbie, I think of the Lindsay Lohan remake that came out in 2005.

Anyways, Motor Authority shared the news that VW will not produce or sell the beloved Bug anymore. Once this generation of Beetles stop running, the company will stop production and has no models for future consideration.

There were once rumors of an electric Beetle hitting the streets, but VW chairman Herbert Diess shut that idea down. Volkswagen will turn the fan-favorite vehicle into a Microbus, so they’ll appeal to everyone who wanted to be a part of Scooby Doo’s gang.

The company did not say when the last Beetle will be sold, but Motor Authority estimates their dealerships will sell the car for a couple more years. The Microbus will be released in 2021.
