On May 28th, 2016 (the year of celebrity deaths), a hero was taken from us too soon. In case you’ve been living under a rock this past year, our lord and savior Harambe, above, was a gorilla who was killed by the Cincinnati Zoo’s Dangerous Animal Response Team after a 4-year-old child crawled into the gorilla enclosure.

Because 2016 was a messed up year, the internet latched onto the gorilla, and his death soon became the year’s biggest meme, pissing off the Cincinnati Zoo as everyone pledged to get their #DicksOutForHarambe.
cincinnati zoo: please stop making harambe memes

@CincinnatiZoo deleted their Twitter just like they deleted Harambe

Now, a year later, what better way to remember our fallen friend than with the dankest memes surrounding his death.
(And, yes, that sentence hurt to type, but I’ll do anything for a loved one gone too soon)
Like, when Danny Trejo offered his condolences:
When the Minnesota Vikings honored Harambe before their games with #SpoonsOutForHarambe:
When these icons sang this beautiful Harambe/Backstreet Boys mash-up:
And, who could forget when someone paid $100,000 for a Harambe-shaped Cheeto?
RIP Harambe, thanks for the memeories.
