HBO Renews ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ For 3 More Seasons

HBO has renewed the Emmy winning Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for three more seasons. The renewal was announced today by the president of HBO programming, Casey Bloys. With these three additional seasons, the show will continue until at least 2020.

Last Week Tonight focuses on issues that deal with news, politics, current events and issues that address broader ranges. The show debuted on HBO in 2014, and is currently up to season four.

Bloys announced in the press release:

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world.”

Bloys then continued by saying:

“His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

Oliver responded by saying:

“First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

The show is so successful that it has been nominated for eight Primetime Emmys: Outstanding Variety Talk Series, Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, and Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming. In 2015, the show took home an Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Program, and last year it took the prize for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

New episodes air Sunday nights exclusively on HBO, which means I now have a reason to stay up past 9 PM on a Sunday night!
