Hostiles looks like the sort of flick for audiences who like their Westerns dusty and morally ambiguous.
The film stars Christian Bale as an Army captain who in 1892 reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to tribal lands. Along the way, they encounter the hostile environment and the hostile people.
Hostiles is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace, Black Mass) and also stars Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Adam Beach (Suicide Squad), Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Q’orianka Kilcher (The New World), and Jesse Plemons.
The trailer makes it clear that this is no white savior narrative typical of the Westerns of yore. Bale’s captain may be the protagonist, and there may even be integrity to his duty, but he does not exactly seem like a great guy. But then again, can anyone, of any race, truly be a good person in this landscape?
Perhaps we will find out when Hostiles comes out December 22. Watch the trailer below:
