If you’re an illegal immigrant and you worked at a 7-11, you were probably fucked last night. You’re also probably not reading this right now, so nevermind.
Anyway, immigration officers raided 100 7-11 convenience stores in search of undocumented employees. More than 20 individuals were arrested in what is being called the largest operation against an employer under the Trump’s presidency.
The raid hit 17 states including California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.
Derek Benner, acting head of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations says this will be an ongoing effort.
“This is what we’re gearing up for this year and what you’re going to see more and more of is these large-scale compliance inspections, just for starters. It’s not going to be limited to large companies or any particular industry — big, medium and small.”
“We need to make sure that employers are on notice that we are going to come out and ensure that they’re being compliant. For those that don’t were going to take some very aggressive steps in terms of criminal investigations to make sure that we address them and hold them accountable.”
