The late Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art has been synonymous with clothing brand Uniqlo’s fast fashion designs as of late, but his estate will likely be a little more exited to find that a 1982 painting has sold for $110.5 million at auction.
Japanese e-commerce billionaire Yusaku Maezawa purchased the piece after a 10-minute bidding war, making him an owner of two well-known Basquiat pieces as he also purchased a $57.3 million piece last year.
I am happy to announce that I just won this masterpiece. When I first encountered this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art. I want to share that experience with as many people as possible.
