Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Bezos have announced that they recently donated $33 million to TheDream.US, the largest organization in the county dedicated to helping young immigrants currently facing deportation under Donald Trump’s immigration laws.
As per the organization’s site, the grant will enable 1,000 immigrant graduations of US high schools with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status an opportunity to go to college, with each of them receiving $33,000 in scholarship funding.
In a statement, Jeff Bezos said, “MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today’s Dreamers by funding these scholarships.” And he clearly means what he says, as the $33 million is the largest donation ever received by organization from one entity in its history.
President of TheDream.US Candy Marshall thanked the Bezoses, saying in a statement,
Our students are highly motivated and determined to succeed in college and in life. Everyone who believes in education and is a friend of the Dreamers would like to thank Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos for this magnificent gift. It is a shot in the arm for Dreamer students at a time when some are questioning whether they should be in the U.S. at all.
This is an awesome move by the Bezos family, as Dreamers need and deserve all the help they can get with the xenophobic pig that is Donald Trump in the White House. Go Jeff and MacKenzie!
