Do you think people with Rolexes are annoying? I do. What if I told you about a clock that costs $42 million and will keep time for 10,000 years? Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos broke the news himself on Twitter Tuesday morning.
Installation has begun—500 ft tall, all mechanical, powered by day/night thermal cycles, synchronized at solar noon, a symbol for long-term thinking—the #10000YearClock is coming together thx to the genius of Danny Hillis, Zander Rose & the whole Clock team! Can we just acknowledge how extra this is? Who in their sane mind needs a 500-foot tall clock that will time for 10 millennia? We can start a conspiracy theory that Bezos has the technology to make humans live forever. If civilization forgets how to tell time in all their technological advancements, then Bezos can become the king of the robot world because he has the power of time.
Because the clock is so huge, it will probably be in a remote location. Thankfully, if it stands for 10,000 years, you will have way too much time to plan your trip. Bezos’s team has spent the last few years machining parts and drilling through a mountain to store the components.
What the fuck…
