I gotta be honest with you, folks. When I first heard about The Young Pope, I thought it was a joke. Or, rather, not so much a joke as just a bizarrely misguided idea. Jude Law as the youngest, slickest, most dangerous leader of the Catholic Church ever? I just did not have an area in my brain that could process it.
Now that I have watched the latest trailer, I still cannot fully process it, but make no mistake: this may just be my most anticipated new show of 2017. Alongside Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII, The Young Pope stars Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, James Cromwell as the Pope’s mentor, and a bunch of European actors in the remaining roles. Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino is on hand as creator and director of every episode.
The Young Pope has already starting airing in Europe, and it debuts Stateside on January 15, 2017 on HBO. Watch the trailer below.
