For me, the scariest part of the Keep Watching trailer has nothing to do with when the killer arrives, or with when he is lurking in the shadows. No, it is the very beginning, when someone declares, “Told you you should have peed at the airport.”
For someone who drinks as much water as I do, a perfectly valid response would be, “Even if I had peed then, I still might have to pee now!” The urge to constantly visit the bathroom when it is not always an option is one of the most terrifying feelings I have ever experienced.
But as for what Keep Watching is intentionally trying to scare us with, it is all about the voyeur state, which seems like it is past due in a day and age when people are constantly recording themselves via social media.
This is hardly the first voyeur horror film, as the presence of video cameras in modern life has been causing anxiety long before they became ubiquitous. And indeed, the tactics of Keep Watching‘s killer appear to closely resemble those of the killer from the genre’s classic progenitor, 1960’s Peeping Tom.
Keep Watching stars Bella Thorne, Ioan Gruffudd, Natalie Martinez, Chandler Riggs, and Insidious‘s Leigh Whannell. Watch the trailer below:
