After a four-year solo hiatus, Kesha has dropped a music video for her song “Praying,” and the result is haunting, yet insanely good.
Seen above, Kesha teased the song yesterday on Instagram, which will serve as the lead single for her upcoming studio album, Rainbow. She also thanked fans for getting her through “what is easily the hardest time of my life.”
Kesha’s solo career had been put on hold since 2013 due to the lawsuit she is involved in, Kesha v. Dr. Luke. Among other claims, she has claimed that Dr. Luke, a record producer and songwriter, sexually assaulted and abused her for a long period of time. The case is still ongoing in the New York Supreme Court.
The song itself is a major departure from the electropop sound she’s known for, and is a largely piano-based song. And it sounds amazing.
Speaking to Lenny Letter, she gave her motives behind the song, stating “I have channeled my feelings of severe hopelessness and depression, I’ve overcome obstacles, and I have found strength in myself even when it felt out of reach. I’ve found what I had thought was an unobtainable place of peace. This song is about coming to feel empathy for someone else even if they hurt you or scare you. It’s a song about learning to be proud of the person you are even during low moments when you feel alone. It’s also about hoping everyone, even someone who hurt you, can heal.”
Rainbow, is scheduled to be released this August. You can watch the music video for “Praying” down below:
