Kevin Spacey is “taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment” following a series of sexual assault allegations, according to his publicist.
After actor Anthony Rapp came forward with a story about Spacey making unwanted advances toward him as a fourteen-year-old boy, Spacey released a statement denying any recollection of the event but confirming that he was gay. Many considered Spacey’s “coming out” a cynical attempt to shift the narrative.
It didn’t work. In the days since, Netflix has suspended production on the final season of House of Cards, and more accusers have come forward alleging inappropriate sexual behavior by the actor. Many stories date to his time as artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London.
Though the Old Vic denies it had any knowledge of Spacey’s behavior and has set up a tip line for victims to report stories of abuse, a number of those familiar with Spacey’s tenure there claim that victims had indeed come forward, and that the theater had turned a blind eye to Spacey’s behavior.
Rumors of Spacey’s behavior have circulated for years, but something has changed following the revelations against Harvey Weinstein. More victims are coming forward, and for once people are listening.
