Recording Academy president Neil Portnow was criticized for his reaction to female artists being underrepresented at the 2018 Grammys. By ignoring the real reasons of gender exclusivity, Portnow blamed women for the lack of inclusiveness at the Grammys.
A joint letter by male music execs has been written to The Recording Academy and Grammys, encouraging efficient efforts at inclusivity and coming clear about their voting blocks. The letter has since garnered the support of almost 40 men.
“Structural flaws in the makeup of The Recording Academy itself have led to systemic issues in the selection of nominees and winners for the awards,” the letter says. “Now is the time for NARAS to lead and be transparent and dedicated to transforming its member base to truly mirror the rich gender and cultural diversity of our community.”
The letter does not call on Portnow’s resignation, as many have demanded.
