Mira Sorvino Stands By Dylan Farrow, Blasts Woody Allen

Mira Sorvino won an Oscar for her performance in Woody Allen’s 1995 film Mighty Aphrodite. Despite the accolade, she will never work with the alleged molester again.

She penned a letter in support of his daughter, Dylan Farrow. It was published by HuffPost and reveals her reasons to steer clear of the filmmaker. It also shows what a proper apology should look like.

“I confess that at the time I worked for Woody Allen I was a naive young actress. I swallowed the media’s portrayal of your abuse allegations against your father as an outgrowth of a twisted custody battle between Mia Farrow and him, and did not look further into the situation, for which I am terribly sorry. For this I also owe an apology to Mia.”

Sorvino’s decision comes as no surprise. She is one of many who believed Allen could do no wrong. People are done turning a blind eye to disgusting behavior, and it’s fantastic. So what if he helped her career? We should applaud her for doing what she deems is right.

“It is difficult to sever ties and denounce your heroes, your benefactors, whom you fondly admired and felt a debt of gratitude toward for your entire career’s existence,” Sorvino said. “To decide, although they may be fantastically talented and helped you enormously, that you believe they have done things for which there can be no excuse. But that is where we stand today.”

This is not the first time Sorvino opened up against someone facing allegations. She told Ronan Farrow of an unwanted interaction with Harvey Weinstein for The New Yorker last fall. Weinstein continues to deny allegations against him. Ronan, who is Dylan’s brother, spoke to Sorvino a second time after she expressed an interest in more information about her case. He responded with “publicly available details of the case I had ruefully never known of, which made me begin to feel the evidence strongly supported your story.”

Sorvino continued:

“We are in a day and age when everything must be re-examined. This kind of abuse cannot be allowed to continue. If this means tearing down all the old gods, so be it. … Even if you love someone, if you learn they may have committed these despicable acts, they must be exposed and condemned, and this exposure must have consequences.”

Woody Allen continues to deny everything, but that won’t stop Hollywood from shutting him out. Dylan’s op-ed for the Los Angeles Times from December called out many actresses to avoid him. Allen’s representative jumped to his aid to speak on her allegations:

“Dylan Farrow’s allegations against Woody Allen, which she first made 25 years ago, have been thoroughly examined by law enforcement officials and child welfare investigators. The investigators concluded unambiguously that Dylan Farrow was not sexually abused. No charges were ever filed, and the reason is simple: because Woody Allen is innocent.”

Dylan used the popular #TIMESUP hashtag in her tweet thanking people on her side. Don’t give up, Dylan, one day the truth will come out.
