If you thought your dad was lame, you were probably right. But, it might comfort you to know that even the perpetually cool former president Barack Obama cannot dance. Like, serious dad moves.
The news comes from a sneak preview of David Letterman’s new Netflix talk show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. The show premieres tomorrow, January 12, but we’ve basically already seen the best part.
Obama told a hilariously endearing story of attending the late musical icon Prince’s concert in 2015 with his daughter Sasha. She was pulled onstage to dance with the singer. Sasha apparently got her moves from Michelle, as Obama says his daughter has amazing dance moves.
Nonetheless, Sasha generously invited her dad up onstage to dance with them (which is seriously impressive of a teenage girl to do). Obama says that, despite his “dad moves” he didn’t embarrass her too much. How? He says the key is to stay “in the pocket.” He explains, “You’ve got to stay in the pocket because I think everybody in here knows dads who get out of the pocket. And they’re trying stuff that they can’t really pull off. And you know, they start doing like karate kicks and all kinds of stuff.”

So basically, staying in the pocket just means acting like a regular human being on the dance floor. This seems simple, but I think we’ve all seen a dad who really goes for it. And really fails at it.
The video surfaced on Twitter, and resonated with users with embarrassing fathers. Mostly, though, it reminded people just how much they missed Obama.
Oh, do I miss America’s president.

Hopefully, Obama’s next career move is teaching a dance class on dad moves.
