Last week, it was reported that a Lord of the Rings TV series was being shopped around to various networks by the J.R.R. Tolkien estate. Well, now it’s just about official, as Amazon is set to plunk down $250 million for global rights.
The series will be a prequel set before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. I suppose that Middle Earth might be expansive enough to mine more material out of, but after The Hobbit trilogy became more and more of a slog with each successive installment, I’m a little wary of this endeavor.
That ridiculous price tag is also cause for concern, especially considering that $250 mil figure is just for the rights and does not all factor in the costs for development, production, marketing, etc. that are still to come. But Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos declared a mandate to have a fantasy series on the same scale as Game of Thrones, and his company has so much precious, precious cash.
