Penelope Cruz has just been announced as the newest cast member to join Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss in the third season of the American Crime Story franchise. The third season will focus on the 1997 assassination of designer Gianni Versace. Cruz will play Donatella Versace, Gianni’s sister who took over the Versace brand after his murder.
The American Crime Story franchise saw great success with its first season The People vs. O.J. Simpson. The second season will focus on the events and politics surrounding Hurrican Katrina and is set to release early 2018. Versace will follow later that year.
It was initially rumored that Lady Gaga would play Donatella Versace, but the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, shot those rumors down. “When you’re going to do a show like Versace, it’s a five-month commitment, it’s a very big show, we’re shooting it all over the world. So I just don’t think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked. But I would love to work with her on something in the future,” he said.
