In a shocking and reveling article published by BuzzFeed News, parents and former members of his entourage have come out accusing singer R. Kelly of “running an abusive “cult” that’s tearing families apart.” Music journalist Jim DeRogatis goes in depth on the report focusing on the parents of a 19-year-old singer from Atlanta who say they haven’t seen their daughter in a year and have only heard from her via two text messages.
The parents of the Atlanta woman are now talking with police and FBI in different states hoping to bring her back home. The singer first met Kelly after her parents took her to one of his concerts and met with him backstage to talk about her career. The BuzzFeed article lays out that Kelly has an abusive pattern of imprisoning women in a sex cult, where he abuses them mentally and sometimes physically.
All of the women in Kelly’s “inner circle” are reportedly of legal age, even when police have conducted well fare checks on them, they’ve claimed to be fine and request to be left alone. The parents’ allegations are being backed up by three former people close to the singer. Cheryl Mack, Kitti Jones, and Asante McGee told BuzzFeed that “six women live in properties rented by Kelly in Chicago and the Atlanta suburbs, and he controls every aspect of their lives: dictating what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.”
The age of the women involved in the allegations make the legalities of the case tricky, nonetheless the allegations are monstrous and disturbing, for example DeRogatis writes:
“Mack, Jones, and McGee claim that women who live with Kelly, who he calls his ‘babies,’ are required to call him ‘Daddy’ and must ask his permission to leave the Chicago recording studio or their assigned rooms in the ‘guest house’ Kelly rents near his own rented mansion in suburban Atlanta. A black SUV with a burly driver behind the wheel is almost always parked outside both locations. Kelly confiscates the women’s cell phones, they said, so they cannot contact their friends and family; he gives them new phones that they are only allowed to use to contact him or others with his permission. Kelly films his sexual activities, McGee and Jones said, and shows the videos to men in his circle.”
As part of Kelly’s rules the women are not allowed to look at another men or dress in revealing clothing as to avoid being looked at. One of DeRogatis’ sources recounts a time when Kelly slapped her outside of a Subway restaurant for simply laughing at the cashiers joke. The article also includes audio clip of conversations between the rapper and the 19-year-old Atlanta woman.
