A lot of people love Ernest Cline’s 2011 reference-heavy dystopian novel Ready Player One, but I thought it was a bit too hacky. Either way, it is being adapted into a big budget action movie directed by Steven Spielberg coming out next spring.
The burning question here is: can Spielberg manage to craft something original in the act of adapting something so heavily indebted to his own work? Based on the trailer, which relies on WOW moments involving a DeLorean, King Kong, and a Tron-style bike, I wouldn’t bet on it. Although Chucky the doll punching someone looks pretty cool.
For those of you interested in the plot, the year is 2045, and most Earthlings get their kicks by hanging out in a virtual reality world known as the OASIS. The recently-deceased creator of the OASIS (a spectacularly bewigged Mark Rylance) promises his massive inheritance to whoever wins the game he has concocted in this VR realm.
