The Barbie brand recently released more dolls as part of their collection, “Inspiring Women.” In honor of women in history, Barbie created dolls to celebrate their achievements.
One of the dolls was in honor of Frida Kahlo, a communist feminist artist. Salma Hayek, who portrayed Kahlo in the movie, Frida, weighed in on the doll, and wasn’t too happy about it. The Frida Kahlo Barbie doll has light eyes, which the real Frida Kahlo did not have, and two distinct eyebrows, erasing Kahlo’s iconic brow.
Hayek posted a photo on Instagram, commenting that she was upset about the portrayal.
“#fridakahlo never tried to be or look like anyone else. She celebrated her uniqueness. How could they turn her into a Barbie No puedo creer que hayan hecho una Barbie de nuestra Friducha que nunca trató de parecerse a nadie y siempre celebró su originalidad 👎👎#body image,” says the caption.
Talk about capitalism.
