Earlier this month, one of everyone’s favorite celebrity couples, Selena Gomez and The Weekend, called it quits. Their breakup was made official when The Weeknd cleared his Instagram of any traces of his ex, even unfollowing most of her friends and family.
After the breakup, though, Selena seemed to be rekindling things with her on-again-off-again ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, after they were spotted several times together.
During an interview with Billboard, Gomez addressed her breakup with The Weeknd, whom she dated for ten months. What she had to say was so positive that it seemed as if she held no ill will for him but rather just truly wishes him the best. She said that they still have a “true friendship” and that the relationship came to an amicable end.
“Something that I’m really proud of is that there’s such a true friendship [between me and The Weeknd]. I truly have never experienced anything like that in my life. We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me.”
When it comes to breakups, things are usually pretty messy, or there’s some bad blood between the two exes. But I commend Gomez and The Weeknd for being above all of that, and even going so far as becoming just friends.
The two reportedly broke up over the phone, the reason being that their schedules were making it difficult to continue on with the relationship.
A source told People at the time, “She [Selena] and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship. It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.”
After the breakup, Selena quickly got back together with her ex- Justin Bieber, and the two were even spotted kissing at one of his hockey games on Nov. 15.

Reportedly, back when Gomez had undergone a kidney transplant in June, Bieber reached out to her, which might have set things in motion for them to get back together later on. Gomez said that in a way, the back and forth between her and Justin helped them get back together. She told Billboard:
“I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away.”
It’s good to see that she’s doing well and is able to move on, and is also able to still be amicable with her ex.
