Sufjan Stevens Went Ahead and Crafted a Trippy Folk Song About Tonya Harding

Tonya Harding and Sufjan Stevens have been in movie news lately, the former due to the Margot Robbie-starring biopic about her and the latter for his songwriting for Call Me by Your Name.

But now the two have teamed up, in the form of “Tonya Harding,” a heartfelt tribute to the notorious but very talented figure skater written and sung by the alternative folkster. It touches on her stardom and white trash reputation and appears to be aiming for the same sort of redemption that I, Tonya is in favor of.

I, Tonya is one of my favorite movies of the year, and I hope that Stevens wins an Oscar for Best Original Song for Call Me by Your Name for “Mystery of Love.” So does that mean I also think “Tonya Harding” should have been featured in I, Tonya? It’s worth a listen, but I would have to say definitively not. It would be too much of a tonal clash with the film’s classic rock hits by the likes of ZZ Top, Heart, and Cliff Richards.
