Terry Crews Opens Up About Being Sexually Assaulted

In the wake of the sexual assault revelations about Hollywood megaproducer Harvey Weinstein, Terry Crews took to Twitter to detail his own experience as the victim of unwanted sexual touching.

Crews, probably the biggest and buffest bundle of positivity and optimism anywhere on the planet, is about the last person you would expect to be sexually assaulted.

And that was the point: sexual harassment is everywhere, and it doesn’t always look the way you imagine it does. And no matter who you are, it’s frightening and even dangerous to come forward publicly, particularly when your attacker is in a position of power and influence.

Terry Crews’s story is a powerful and vital reminder that sexual harassment and assault is complicated. It isn’t just the ass-grabber on the subway; it’s people you know who ignore social cues, who are a little too “playful,” who smile at you and act like you’re in the wrong, like you just can’t take a joke.

In order to combat sexual harassment, we need to combat both our assumptions and our complacency.
