The 5 Most Inspirational Basketball Movies

Basketball movies are great. They may be corny to real athletes, but for us lazy assholes, a fake coach yelling at fake players can mean so much.

We love sports so much, so when a good movie and a fun sport like basketball merge, it can only produce a good thing. Basketball brings people together across the nation, we all follow the top players on social media, and it even causes a frenzy every March.

It’s been a popular sport for so long, thanks to great athletes like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. We’ll never stop watching the sport, but if you get sad after your pick gets knocked out of the NCAA Tournament, perhaps one of these flicks can help you feel better.

High School Musical

This movie is a staple for my generation. Disney Channel had some slamming originals back in the 2000s and HSM was definitely one of the best, if not the best. Premiering in 2006, it turned Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens into the stars we know today. Troy loved basketball and grew to appreciate singing, but he found a balance for both. HSM reminds us that we don’t have to choose between two loves, but should instead make time for both. We all have the last say in how we spend our own time and that’s super inspirational.

Like Mike

This kid goes from playing pick-up games on the blacktop to playing in the NBA. If that’s not inspirational I don’t know what is. Lil’ Bow Wow may have peaked as an actor with this film, but damn did I love this growing up. While everyone wanted to be like Michael Jordan, Calvin Cambridge was also a figure who inspired many.

The Hickory Huskers are role models for everyone. This ’80s movie is known by basketball fans everywhere. It kicks away the idea of social hierarchies and teaches that hard work does pay off. The determination of the team to win can teach us to fight for what we want. They wanted the state championship and left everything on the court in pursuit of it. How can we not look up to them?

More Than a Game

LEBRON. JAMES. The man’s been a stud his entire life, and it started in high school. This film follows the efforts of his team and all the challenges they overcame as a squad to be a successful basketball team. From the tough inner-city streets to state championship contenders, anything is possible if you work hard enough for it.

White Men Can’t Jump

This movie is amazing. Simply, that’s the best way to describe it. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes turn from enemies to a winning duo that can’t be stopped. Along the way we see some jokes, money problems, and even relationship issues. White Men Can’t Jump covers a spectrum of problems, but through it all, Woody and Wesley see what basketball can do for them. It’s an inspirational movie for anyone no matter where you’re from.
