On the 50-year anniversary of Barefoot in the Park, film legends Jane Fonda and Robert Redford are reuniting for the Netflix movie Our Souls at Night. The film stars the actors as elderly neighbors who have lived next to each other for years but have never spent much time together. Both alone and growing old, they kindle a sort of romance that they have both sought after for years.
Both Redford and Fonda have expressed a great amount of interest in working with one another for quite some time now, and it appears that they have finally gotten their wish. The actors reminisced about how much they enjoyed falling in love together in Barefoot in the Park. Said Fonda:
In Barefoot in the Park, I couldn’t keep my hands off of him. I was constantly forcing myself on him. In Our Souls at Night, the dynamic of my character to his character was somewhat similar. I just love the fact that these films bookend our careers. . . . I wanted to be able to fall in love with him again.
Redford reciprocated these feelings, saying that “things have always been easy” between the two. “There’s a love there, there’s a connection there. It has to do with what your attitude is about work and what is your attitude about life.”
In the film, Fonda plays Addie Moore, a widow who instigates the late-life romance with Redford’s character, Louis Waters, an older man with a complicated past. Love stories are things we see time and time again in Hollywood, but romance between older folks seems to fall a bit to the wayside. However, as Our Souls at Night features a couple of the most renowned actors of all time, it looks like it could break this trend and show us that love is truly ageless.
